As one of Japan’s three major traditional arts, Noh and Kyogen are collectively called Nohgaku. Established during the Muromachi period, it is said to be the oldest traditional art. Noh is performed to the utai (song and dialogue) and the hayashi (music) played by instruments. The performers wear Noh masks and express the story and the characters’ feelings through movement. Human characters as well as demons, deities, and monsters appear in Noh plays. Sit back, enjoy the Noh theater, and let it inspire you.
